Write a commentToday’s province wide strike affecting public transport, education and government administration departments has been widely supported in Newry with large groups of strikers outside virtually all local schools and transport hubs as well as Newry Courthouse and other government departments. No Translink buses or Trains are operating today.
The strikers are protesting at the Stormont House Agreement and the connected budget which has proposed cutting 20,000 posts in the Public sector over a four year period.
Martin McKeown from Unite commented that “Tens of Billions have been saved since the Good Friday Agreement on military hardware, so where is the peace dividends that have been promised by the British Government/ Stormont and the various political parties? Year after year we have seen a steady erosion of our public services. Newry now has a number of food banks and soup kitchens in operation (which are doing sterling work and a roaring trade) none of these existed during the darkest days of the troubles, but yet they still maintain we are better off!”
