Newry city councillor Doire Finn has launched a public petition calling on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to keep the name of the late Sean Hollywood on Newry’s new arts facility. The petition follows the rejection by Council of a request to preserve the name. Cllr Finn argues that Hollywood’s contribution to the arts in Newry should continue to be recognised in the replacement facility. The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre is currently in the process of being demolished to be replaced with a new Theatre/ Conference centre that will be attached to Newry Town Hall forming one facility.
Cllr Finn said the strength of feeling in the city about Hollywood’s legacy was clear.
“I am deeply disappointed that Council has rejected my proposal to retain Sean’s name on the new facility. This is not simply about a building. It is about recognising a man whose contribution to our city deserves lasting acknowledgement.
“I have launched this petition because I believe the people of Newry should have their say. The strength of feeling around Sean Hollywood’s legacy is clear and I want Council to listen to those voices.”
Cllr Finn said the new theatre and arts centre was welcome, but she did not want the name to be lost in the process.
“The development of a new theatre and arts centre is welcome and represents an exciting new chapter for the arts in Newry. But progress shouldn’t come at the expense of our history.”
She spoke of Hollywood’s influence on generations of local people.
“For generations of people in Newry, the name Sean Hollywood has been synonymous with the arts. His contribution to nurturing creativity, developing local talent and inspiring young people is woven into the cultural fabric of our city. Many of us took our first steps onto a stage because of his passion, encouragement and belief in local talent.
“Sean Hollywood’s legacy is unparalleled. He dedicated his life to teaching young people their craft, opening doors and creating opportunities that helped shape countless lives. His impact continues to be felt not just in Newry, but across Ireland and beyond.”
Cllr Finn urged people in Newry to get behind the petition.
“Retaining Sean’s name would ensure that future generations understand the debt our city owes to one of its greatest cultural champions. I would encourage everyone who values the arts and Sean’s contribution to sign the petition and help us protect an important part of Newry’s cultural heritage.”
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council adopted a 'Policy on Naming Council Facilities' in December 2020 which states: "Council will not accept requests to memorialise a deceased person (or family)."
