The Department for Infrastructure has said that the new Toucan Pedestrian crossing on New Street in Newry should be fully operational as soon as possible following a power supply connection in mid December. Work started in January 2026 but currently only the footpath crossing structure is in place.

A DfI spokesperson said: "The utility provider has informed the Department that the power supply will be connected in mid December. Once that work has taken place the Department will arrange with contractors to fully complete the crossing to enable it to become operational as soon as possible."

The crossing on the busy carriageway will make it safer for pedestrians to cross from Mourneview Park and WIN Business Park as well as those on the Newry Canal towpath. It will also form a part of the new proposed Newry Inner City Greenway linking Newry Canal Towpath to the Carlingford Lough Greenway.
