Phase One of Newry Greenway to be completed early 2017

Representatives of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Louth County Council and Ulster Wildlife met at the Albert Basin site in Newry on Tuesday past to view progress on Phase One of the Newry Greenway which is scheduled to be completed early in the New Year. It follows the announcement earlier this week of an offer of EU funding from the INTERREG VA Programme for the completion of the Greenway all the way through to Carlingford. The completed greenway will be known as the Carlingford Lough Greenway

The latest stretch of greenway will run from the Dublin Road Bridge in Newry through the Albert Basin site and along Middlebank as far as the weir between Newry Ship Canal and Newry River - a distance of approximately 2.2 kilometres.

The Greenway provides a very scenic stone surfaced path 2.5 metres wide while conserving as much of the natural habitat of mature trees and vegetation as possible. Once complete, the Greenway will provide a safe off road access corridor between the two waterways of Newry Ship Canal and Newry River for use by walkers, runners and cyclists.

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said “I am delighted to see the progress that has already been made to construct a quality Greenway from Newry along the Middlebank that will ultimately link up with the excellent Greenway that Louth County Council has developed. This is a wonderful example of effective Cross Border cooperation to deliver a world class outdoor recreational facility for everyone to use and enjoy.”

Louth County Council has already constructed 6.2 kms of Greenway from Omeath to Carlingford Marina and this has proved very popular with the public since it opened in 2014 . The two Councils, working in partnership under the Memorandom of Understanding have agreed to develop a Cross Border Greenway to extend the Newry section from the weir on Middlebank to Victoria Lock and across the border to link up with the existing Greenway in Omeath.

The project which has been designed and managed by R Robinson and Sons Ltd is funded by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council through the Landfill Communities Fund administered by Ulster Wildlife.
