Planning permission has been granted for the erection of a life size model of a Bessbrook tram on the A1 roundabout at the Camlough Road in Newry.
The tram is life size with a height of 2.2 metres and length of 8.5 metres. Internally the tram will be fitted with laser cut silhouettes of people from that era made from opaque Perspex. The proposal will be set back in the roundabout to ensure it does not cause an obstruction to the oncoming traffic.
Bessbrook and Newry Tramway ran from Newry to Bessbrook underneath the Craigmore viaduct between 1885 and 1948 to carry workers from Newry to Bessbrook Mill.
