The Department for Infrastructure is prioritising repairs to a bridge at the Fairy Glen in Rostrevor after being contacted by South Down MLA Andrew McMurray.
Mr McMurray was responded to a constituent's concerns over significant damage to the bridge. The MLA met with the constituent to see the damage for himself and discovered significant loss at the base of a pillar, where the oncoming flow hits the bridge hard.
The Department advised Mr McMurray that engineers had been dispatched in response to his letter to further investigate and consider what repairs were required. They also confirmed that the damage had been caused during removal of debris from the river. The Department advised that it is "now in the process of prioritising repairs to the masonry cutwater on the structure and [is] currently working closely with [its] measured term contractor to organise a programme for repairs as soon as possible." However, no timeframe for the repair could be confirmed at this time.
Mr McMurray stated: "I am grateful to the Constituent and to my Constituency Officer, Cllr Helena Young, for bringing this issue to my attention. After raising the damage with the Department for Infrastructure, I have been assured that the issue will be addressed as soon as possible. As no specific timeframe has been given, I will follow up with the Department in the near future to ensure this is indeed happening without undue delay."
