A Haunted Halloween Walk suitable for all the family is taking place at Derrymore Woods on Sunday 26 October, with the Head Injury Support Camino team raising funds towards the £40,000 target they have set themselves. The community event will run from 10am to 4pm and will feature a scarecrow trail created by local primary schools, spooky mannequins throughout the woods, and plenty of activities for children.
Between 12 and 15 primary schools from Newry, south Armagh and south Down have each created life-size scarecrows that are going to be positioned along the woodland trail. Walkers will be asked to vote for their favourite, with the winning school receiving a £100 donation.
Organisers have been working closely with Derrymore Men's Shed to bring the event together, and carers from Head Injury Support have created a number of mannequins in spooky costumes that visitors will see dotted throughout the woods. There will be games for children along the route.
St Paul's High School A Level art students recently decorated the windows for Halloween at Head Injury Support in Kildare Street and will also be on hand on the day in Halloween costume.
On site there will be burgers, a coffee van and a tuck shop, as well as crafts made by brain injury survivors. The organisers are encouraging families to come along in fancy dress and lots of children are already planning to dress up for the occasion.
Roisin Mulgrew from Head Injury Support commented "I know there's a lot of disappointment in the community that they can never get tickets for the likes of Footsteps in the Forest in Slieve Gullion, those bigger events. This is a community event being organised by the Camino walkers, and every single penny is going to support the survivors here in Head Injury Support."
The Head Injury Support team will be collecting donations throughout the day.
