Police in Newry have arrested a 34 year old male after receiving a report of suspicious activity in the Raven's Glen area.

At 9.35pm on Thursday, 15 March, police received a report of a male in dark clothing peering into house windows. Officers attended and a 34 year old man was arrested for going equipped for burglary and vehicle tampering. A quantity of tools were also recovered. The man was subsequently arrested in relation to a number of other recent burglaries in the area.

He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Newry Neighbourhood Police Team are calling on active and interested residents of Greater Linenhall Square and Mourneview Park to sign up to the local neighbourhood watch schemes.

The co-ordinators of both schemes have recently stepped down and local officers are keen to see the schemes continue and grow.

Sergeant Gracey, Newry NPT, explained: "Neighbourhood Watch is a system that promotes being a good neighbour. It means that neighbours look out for each other, especially those who are most vulnerable. It promotes neighbours being vigilant, reporting suspicious activity and working together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

"It can help people feel safer in their homes, and promotes co-operation between the police and the community.

"The two-way communication with the community helps police to quickly identify emerging crime trends, to offer appropriate crime prevention advice and to adjust patrolling patterns to deter and detect offenders.

"The success of Neighbourhood Watch is largely dependant on scheme coordinators who give up their time voluntarily to work with the police, Community Safety Partnership and District Policing Partnership to assist their neighbourhoods in tackling crime.

"If you are interested in taking up the post of coordinator for Greater Linenhall Square or Mourneview Park you can give us a call in Ardmore on 0845 600 8000."

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an assault in Erskine Street.

Some time between 1pm and 1.20pm on Wednesday, 8 February, a 19 year old male was assaulted by three unknown males. One of the male used a bottle to strike the teenager. The 19 year old sustained injuries to his head and face.

The three males are described as being around 20 years old. One of them was wearing a red Adidas hoody and blue jeans and another was wearing a grey hoody.

The males may have been seen in the New Street, Mourneview Park, Erskine Street and Canal Street areas prior to the assault.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault or has information in relation to it to contact them

PSNI Neighbourhood and Response officers in Newry South recently visited homes in the Dublin Road and Chancellors Road areas to highlight steps that home owners can take to protect their property from burglary.

Officers carried out joint foot patrols, including the Ravens Glen and Chancellors Hall areas, and posted information leaflets on home safety and the Quick Check Scheme through doors. A vehicle checkpoint was also conducted.

Constable Valentine, Newry South NPT, explained: "We are working to detect and deter potential burglars and hope that patrols in the area also offer reassurance and peace of mind to residents.

"We also want to encourage everyone to look after their own neighbourhood and report any activity which looks out of place or suspicious to us straight away.

"We are working with the local community to establish further new Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in Chancellors Road and Dublin Road. A number of residents have expressed interest in becoming involved in a scheme and we are hopeful that these will be established in the coming weeks.

"If anyone would like information on home safety they can contact their local neighbourhood policing team or crime prevention officer. The neighbourhood team can also be contacted for further information on neighbourhood watch schemes.
