Police have confirmed the name of the man who died following a single vehicle road traffic collision at the Albert Basin in Newry yesterday, 8 October. John O’Brien, 67 passed away at the scene. Mr O'Brien was a member of The Haven, run by The Salvation Army in Newry and they have paid tribute to him on their social media channels. A spokesperson said "It is with heavy hearts that we remember our dear Scottish John, John O’Brien. He brought so much joy, laughter, and friendship to all of us at The Haven, and his memory will live on in our hearts forever."

They added “We are praying for all our friends who come to The Haven, Newry, and for John’s family and friendship circle. The Salvation Army hall will be open for anyone who needs space to reflect, pray, talk, or be with others. We thank God for all the joy and laughter John brought into our lives and pray for his eternal peace.”

The Salvation Army have opened a Book of Condolence at The Salvation Army Hall on Trevor Hill in the city, Today & Tomorrow: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM & 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Saturday: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
 

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with the police investigation, is asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 901 of 08/10/25.

Police say they are aware of a distressing image being circulated from the scene of this road fatality and request that the sharing of this graphic scene image to cease immediately, out of consideration for the family impacted. 

Persons found to be sharing the image may be committing the offence of improper use of public electronic communications network. If anyone has information about the originator, or this image being disseminated, please contact Police on 101.
