The PSNI Search and Rescue team are involved in the operation in a shallow stretch of Newry Canal.
It's part of an investigation into incidents in Forkhill 13 October.
In a short statement the PSNI said "Detectives investigating incidents in Forkhill in South Armagh on Tuesday, 15th October are carrying out searches in the Newry Canal area this morning."
Two men were hospitalised in Newry after an incident in Forkhill on the evening of 15 October, where one was assaulted and a second sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach.
A Blue Honda Accord was discovered burnt out in Mourneview Park in Newry on the same night. It's not known if todays search is related to this.
