Members of Newry’s Polish community and other supporters gathered at Newry Town Hall to remember the life of Damian Sobol who was killed by an Israeli air strike whilst delivering food to the starving people of Gaza.
Damian was one of the seven aid workers killed by the Israeli airstrike whilst working for the charity World Central Kitchen.
The protest was organised by Dan Gebski in conjunction with Ireland Palestine conjunction campaign.
Gebski said when making a speech to the crowd “My question is to the Israeli government is, why?”.
“Why did you kill an innocent man for trying to help people?”
After his speech Gebski read a series of statements from people about Damian and then a minute of silence was held in remembrance of those killed.
The protest took place on Wednesday night as many people in the Polish community as well as supporters of Palestine showed up to show their solidarity for the cause.
Newry City Councilor Cathal King who attended the protest said, “today our hearts are heavy with a mix of anger and sorrow as we mourn the tragic loss of seven selfless and dedicated individuals at the world central kitchen who were murdered by Israel in Gaza”.
