Ulster GAA shows their commitment to improving road safety by signing up to ‘ Share the Road to Zero’ campaign.
There have been many organisations that have signed to the initiative such as the PSNI, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, The Northern Ireland Football League as well as the Fire and Rescue Service to name a few.
Over 170 people have lost their lives on Northern Irelands roads over the last three years and this campaign aims to try and prevent accidents like these from happening in the future by recognising what makes these accidents happen and how people can be safer on the roads.
Department of Infrastructure John O’Dowd has said “We are delighted Ulster GAA is taking the ‘Share the Road to Zero’ pledge. Their support will help us raise better awareness of what we can all do to change our behaviours on the road”.
“Sadly, evidence shows that more than 95% of road deaths are due to human error - careless or inattentive driving, inappropriate speed for the road or the conditions, and drink and drug driving account for the majority of deaths and serious injuries”.
“The GAA’s support today will help open more conversation about what we can all do, whether we are travelling on foot or on wheels, to help ensure everyone gets to their destination safely”.
Both Minister O’Dowd and Ulster Provincial Secretary Brian McAvoy were happy to take the Share the Road to zero campaign pledge,
When asked how Secretary McAvoy felt about taking the pledge he said, “I am delighted to pledge my commitment to the aims of the Share the Road to Zero campaign”.
“We all have a responsibility to improve our behaviour on the roads, and I would encourage all, including the GAA family to get behind this campaign and take the Share the Road to Zero pledge”.
