With Belfast Pride taking place next weekend the Department for Communities have emphasised their support to our LGBTQI+ communities. With no Newry Pride parade this year many from Newry will make their way down to the colourful event. This year the PSNI have decided that unlike last year they won't allow officers in uniform to take part in the parade.
Many thousands of people take part in Belfast Pride and other Pride events around the country. The events are important opportunities for members of our LGBTQI+ communities and their allies to increase their visibility within society and help create a sense of belonging for communities who may feel they are ignored within society due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Department for Communities Permanent Secretary, Colum Boyle said: “It is fantastic that PRIDE continues to grow with more events happening in communities right across the region and I want to promote a message of equality and inclusion for our LGBTQI+ communities and acknowledge the positive contribution they bring to society.
“PRIDE events are open to all, and I would encourage as many people as possible to attend to celebrate and show support for all our LGBTQI+ communities."
Boyle concluded “The Department for Communities will continue to support and protect the rights of all our LGBTQI+ communities and promote an inclusive society that is built on equality and respect.”
