The PSNI in Newry have commented on the use of E-Scooters in Newry and have pointed out that their use is still illegal here. In a comment on Facebook a spokesperson said "We are seeing an increase in the usage of E-Scooters on the roads and other public areas of Newry City." They add that the usage of E-Scooters anywhere other than on private land is illegal and riders could be prosecuted for a number of motoring offences such as No Driving Licence and No Insurance etc.
They add "The usage of E-Scooters on a road, cycle lane or pavement is very dangerous and can lead to serious injuries being sustained by both riders or members of the public."
While you can legally buy E-Scooters you technically can only ride them on private land although in recent months their increased popularity sees them in use everyday throughout the city.
The PSNI claim that if you are stopped they may just ask you to take it home but depending on the seriousness of the offence you could be prosecuted for no driving licence or receive a fixed penalty notice for no insurance!
