Write a commentSeveral local councillors have condemned graffiti that appeared recently in the area of the North Street car park citing Newry as a Multicultural city that embraces all cultures and creeds.
Sinn Fein Councillor Valerie Harte informed the Council about the graffiti and has been assured it will be removed.
Commenting on the incident Cllr Harte said "I was contacted by local residents about the appearance of this racist graffiti. They, like myself condemn this anti social behaviour in the strongest way possible. Actions like this cause concerns and problems".
Her colleague, Newry & Armagh MLA Mickey Brady commenting on the wider issue of racism said "Newry is a vibrant multi-cultural City and any form of racism should not be tolerated. Every resident of the area has a right to live and work in peace, and to go about their lives free from racism, or any form of discriminatory abuse".
SDLP MLA, Dominic Bradley also condemned those responsible saying “I totally condemn the racist graffiti that was scrawled in Newry this weekend. There is no absolutely no justification for such a divisive act of vandalism and no form of racism can be tolerated. ”
“Newry is proud to embrace all cultures and creeds and those who perpetrate this act are in no way representative of the people of the city. I am certain that the residents of Newry will join me in condemning this disgusting act of racism.”
He added: “I would urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the PSNI immediately.”
