Racist graffiti has appeared on the wall outside St Brigid's Church in The Meadow in Newry. The incident has been condemned by the Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Michael Savage who called it a vile act.
Branding the defacement disgraceful the Chairperson said it did not represent the people of Newry.
Councillor Savage said “It’s absolutely disgraceful that anyone would take the time to spray racist graffiti in the middle of Newry, but to do this outside a church and beside a local primary school makes it all the more sinister. The people who carried out this vile act have achieved nothing other than to unite the local community in disgust at their actions.
“Newry is a diverse and welcoming place where people from every background live, work and socialise together in peace. This is an area with a real sense of community where people look after each other and this incident is an attack on the people of our city and the values they cherish.
“There is no place for racism in our society and I know that local parishioners will also be upset by what’s taken place. The idea of local schoolchildren having to walk past it this morning is shameful."
Newry Alliance Representative Helena Young also expressed her disgust about the graffiti. Young said "Newry is home to a very diverse population and any form of racism should be very strongly condemned.
"This vile graffiti does not represent the residents of our area. The perpetrators should be ashamed of themselves.
"I am liaising with Canon Brown regarding this issue and Damien Mallon from DM power washing has very kindly offered to assist with removing the graffiti"
Earlier today members of the group Saoradh made the graffiti unreadable until it could be professionally removed.
