Gabrielle McTaggart with her son Caolán

Lissummon native and Newtownhamilton resident Sean Quinn is on his way to the Alps today to take on the Mont Blanc 4 Day Trek to help his Niece Gabrielle McTaggart raise funds for breast cancer while also raising awareness of the disease. Sean will be raising money for two charities Mummy's Star and Cancer Fund for Children.

You can donate at www.gofundme.com

Mummy's Star is dedicated to women and birthing people diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy or within 12 months of giving birth, and their families. while Cancer Fund for Children offers support for children and young people diagnosed with cancer or living with a parent with cancer. They offer support to families in their home, in the community, on the hospital ward and at Daisy Lodge near Newcastle.

At 36 weeks pregnant Gabrielle was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. BRCA 1 positive. Grade 3. As she explains "Heavily pregnant I was devastated by the news. For months I was told it was breast changes due to pregnancy. This was not the case. I was immediately induced with my second son and had a safe delivery. Unfortunately this little boy was not ready to come out and ended up being NG fed for a week. Unfortunately he did not tolerate the milk so Mummy’s Star funded us £1500 worth of donor milk from the human milk bank. With this kind donation he made a drastic recovery."

Gabrielle continued "This also delayed my treatment plan, which was initially chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Unfortunately of recent we have discovered the tumour is chemo resistant and I urgently need surgery. Our entire aim of raising awareness is not only to remind ladies to check their breasts but to raise awareness of a cancer diagnosis in pregnancy. Although rare it is becoming more common and often missed by health care professionals."

Stressing the importance of support during a cancer diagnosis Gabrielle said "Behind all this treatment this hell that is cancer there are two beautiful children. Like all children who’s parent has a cancer they need support. Bereaved little ones, teenagers and all ages who are missing mama or dada. This is what we want to raise money for. The broken little hearts. Let’s help by giving something back to these amazing charities.

"Where I go on my journey with my two young children I do not know but like my uncle Sean we must keep climbing on. We must fight the good fight." she adds.

If you notice any changes in your breast do not hesitate to ring your GP. Early detection can save lives.
