Remedial work is to be carried out next week on the surface of the Carlingford Lough Greenway between Albert Basin and Victoria Lock following complaints from members of the public about the coarse gravel surface on the popular path. Following these works Council will decide if short or medium term improvements are deemed necessary.
Repair work had been carried out in February and March and the stretch was closed for several weeks after Storm Eowyn. Work carried out on the path resulted in a coarse gravel finish on the entire route, a surface that made it difficult to cycle on and unsuitable for wheelchair users.
In an answer to a media query from Newry.ie a council spokesperson said "Newry, Mourne and Down District Council acknowledges the concerns raised in relation to the recently laid surface along the stretch from Albert Basin to Victoria Lock and will be addressing the issue to improve the user experience."
The spokesperson added “A contractor is scheduled to attend the site next week to carry out remedial works, along the stretch between Victoria Lock and Albert Basin. This initial intervention will allow Council officers to assess the condition of the surface and determine whether additional short- or medium-term improvements are necessary."
