The beautiful Sliabh gCuircin/ Camlough Mountain on the outskirts of Newry has much potential and local organisations the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership and Outdoor Recreation are working to develop a Recreation Plan for the facility. They want feedback from the public on what is needed for the area. They want to know how you currently use Camlough Mountain, and how you would like to see it developed, used and managed in the future.
Currently quite a few people climb the mountain but for anyone that isn't local it is unclear where to start your climb from due to lack of signs or obvious tracks. Many years ago Camlough Forest Drive was in operation and you could drive around the mountain but in recent years this has been closed and even accessing the facility with a bicycle is difficult.
Slieve Gullion Councillor Oonagh Magennis believes that Camlough mountain is an incredible natural resource for the communities of South Armagh. Speaking after attending a recent information gathering session on the facility in Camlough, Councillor Magennis said “Cllr. Cathal King and I attended a drop in session on how we can make the most of this incredible location. Some of the main issues being raised by local residents focused on a lack of proper car parking and a lack of mapped out walking trails as well as littering and dog fouling. It’s important that we’re all responsible and care for the mountain when we make use of it.
“I look forward to hearing the various suggestions from the community on how we can make the most out of Camlough mountain and hope that it will lead to positive developments for the site in the future.
“We’ve seen the great boost that the development of Slieve Gullion has given to our area, improving Camlough mountain can be another step in realising the tourism potential of South Armagh.”
