Derelict buildings in Newry and Downpatrick are set for a major funding boost amid demands for landlords to be “held accountable” for town centres in disrepair.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Tourism committee approved a new plan to revitalise town centres this week.
A council report before the chamber states that a 'Revive and Reimagine - Commercial Property Grant' will offer up to £200k grants (50% of total eligible costs) through a letter of offer from the Department for the Economy with an action plan to be rolled out in the new year.
A motion brought forward by Newry SDLP councillor Killian Feehan read: “This council calls for the establishment of a pilot programme aimed at incentivising the restoration and redevelopment of vacant and derelict properties in Newry and Downpatrick.”
He added: “This is obviously a piece of work that is needed, it is recognised across the district and I want to commend the work of the Local Economic Partnership and the council officers for driving this forward.”
The council’s deputy chairperson Geraldine Kearns said: “I am delighted that the offer from the DfE has been secured. By addressing the issues of dereliction and vacancy it will help bring new investment and businesses.”
Cllr Helena Young welcomed the initiative and said "I think that we'll all agree that a lot of our town centres have gone into disrepair, and those who are responsible need to be held accountable."
