The Riverside Church congregation in Newry have just installed a Defibrillator outside their premises at Basin Walk.
They join a growing number of premises including, shops, shopping centres and sports facilities locally who have the lifesaving equipment installed. A defibrillator is a device that is used to give a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest.
Speaking of the facility Committee member Noel McCune from Riverside Church said “The Church Committee decided a few months ago that it would be a valuable resource for the community”
The more defibrillator’s there are placed around Newry, the better chance there is that someones life could be saved in the case of an emergency. The equipment is set up so anyone can use it with the device giving spoken instructions on how to use it.
Another service Riverside hope to offer in the near future is training for local business people who are in the area every day. As Noel adds “We hope to offer some specific training in using the equipment as well as resuscitation techniques to local businesses in the area.”
