Saoradh in Newry are planning to unveil a plaque and organise a clean up of the tunnel at Heather Park/Gallows Hill where local United Irishmen were executed.
Outlining the party's plans Saoradh's Newry representative Stephen Murney explained "Our local craobh visited the historical site last week and while it was fascinating to stand at the same spot that revolutionaries of 1798 were taken to be executed, It was noticeable that there was nothing in place that explains what the tunnel was used for, while the passageway itself was strewn with rubbish."
Plans are in place to carry out the clean up 8 August at 2pm when they hope to erect a plaque detailing the significance of the tunnel and explain what it was used for.
Murney added "We hope that this will help give the area the recognition it deserves as it's an important part of our history."
