Newry & Mourne Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins has stated that a recent request from her to Roads Service seeking an extension of the 30mph speed limit to cover the frontage of Cloghoge Primary School had been refused.
"Roads Service have informed me it is their belief that conditions on the ground remain unchanged and that the existing 40mph speed limit is appropriate" said the Councillor who continued "There is a general feeling amongst the community that the 30mph speed limit should be extended. I support that view and will continue to lobby Roads Service for a review".
Councillor Kimmins added that she had been informed that the issue of Traffic Calming for the Newtown Road/Parkview locality was now deemed by Roads Service as "relatively high on the Traffic Calming priority list".
Commenting on this the Sinn Féin elected representative said "Whilst this is welcome, unfortunately Roads Service state that the works are dependant on availability of finance and agreement with residents. This is frustrating because once again the much needed traffic calming measures in this locality, seem to have been out on the long finger"
