The SDLP have selected two candidates to contest the Slieve Gullion DEA local government election on 18 May. Councillor Pete Byrne and Killian Feehan have been selected by the party. Byrne succeeded the late Geraldine Donnelly as a Slieve Gullion Councillor in 2016, and Feehan is seeking to regain the seat once held by SDLP stalwarts Kate Loughran and John Feehan.
Speaking after the submission of nomination papers, Councillor Byrne said: “I am privileged to be standing once again to represent the people of Slieve Gullion. It has been my pleasure to represent my local community since 2016. In that time, I have sought to be a strong advocate for my area by campaigning to defend youth services in Crossmaglen, leading on the reform of policing in South Armagh, and fighting to ensure that South Armagh is included and represented in the Council’s tourism strategy.
“I am proud of what we have achieved together over the last 7 years, and I am asking the people of Slieve Gullion to back me once again so we can continue to drive our community forward."
Asking for support of the community Feehan said: “It’s an honour to be standing alongside Pete Byrne as an SDLP candidate in Slieve Gullion. This is the place I was born and raised, and I want to see it do well. I believe that we deserve a lot better than what we’re currently getting from our Council. I want to see greater ambition from Council to advance South Armagh’s interests, and I am seeking support to secure that.
“Pete and I have been working together to put South Armagh on the map in relation to tourism, we are fighting to defend local health services at Daisy Hill and in community health centres across the area, and we are fighting to protect local youth and community services in South Armagh. We are asking for the support of our community on Thursday 18th May to drive these issues forward and ensure that South Armagh’s voice is heard loud and clear in the Council chamber.”
