Craobh Rua Hurling Club and Camlough Community Association invite you to join them at this years Darkness Into Light Walk at the Derramore Forest Park Walking Trail. It takes place this Saturday the 7th May at 4:15am.
Speaking at the launch of this event at Derramore House, Craobh Rua Camlocha Health and Well Being Officer Eamon McCann said,
“This will be a family friendly, safe event and we invite all to attend to ‘share one sunrise together’. Our Club is very proud to be once again involved in the organising of this event along with the Camlough Community Association.
We appreciate the support of the National Trust staff and ‘The Friends of Derrymore” and we urge anyone participating on this walk to respect the environment and the location.
By taking part in Darkness Into Light participants will unite in every corner of Ireland to help shine a light on suicide and self-harm while raising vital funds for Pieta’s and PIPs lifesaving support and services.
PIPs Hope & Support are a Charity Partner of Pieta House and will be receiving 50% of what this event raises”.
Speaking also at the launch of the event Finance Minister Conor Murphy said the tragedy of suicide is one that has touched nearly all sectors and communities in Ireland.
He said,
“The Suicide and self harm rate remains stubbornly high. The tragedy of suicide is one that has touched nearly all sectors and communities in Ireland.
I have no doubt that, through the unstinting efforts of voluntary and community groups and statutory services, lives have been saved.
However, every life lost is one too many and we must continue to work together across government and other sectors to reduce the incidence of suicide”.
Raymond Flynn local Darkness into Light Coordinator extending an invite to all to attend the early morning Walk said,
“Suicide Prevention services are in demand more than ever and they need the public’s support. This annual Walk will raise funds for not only Pieta House but also for P.I.P.S Hope and Support. Those taking part can register at WWW.DARKNESSINTOLIGHT.IE or make a donation on the morning.
Together, we can build a brighter future and give hope to all who have been impacted by suicide and self-harm here locally, throughout Ireland and across the globe”.
Local Councillor and Camlough Community Association member Declan Murphy talking about the importance of challenging the stigma related in particular to self harm said,
“It is important we are not afraid to talk about all aspects of mental health. We must challenge the stigma and continue to offer support.
This Darkness into Light event will hopefully ensure that the issues of suicide and self harm are taken seriously and that the pressures felt by voluntary and community sector organisations providing suicide prevention services are alleviated through appropriate resourcing and financial support”.
Seamus McCabe, Chief Executive of PIPS Hope and Support, “We are immensely proud to be selected along with Pieta House as the beneficiaries of this event and would like to express our grateful thanks and appreciation to Bessbrook and Camlough Darkness Into Light Committee the Camlough Community Association and would like to give a special word of thanks to Craobh Rua Camlocha Hurling club. Unfortunately, many people in our community have been by touched by suicide, but this very special event undoubtedly touches everyone who takes part, harnessing the power of coming together and bringing hope to those most in need. It is a great initiative to raise awareness and to recognise the pain suffered by victims and their families, whilst also raising much-needed funds for two charities – who help many vulnerable and bereaved families every year. Again thank you to everyone involved and taking part in this event and for their ongoing support”
