Cllr Roisin Mulgrew, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down Council spoke of the launch, “The Council is excited to announce that the launch weekend for the new Newry Leisure Centre will be on Saturday 4 November and Sunday 5 November and everyone is welcome to come and see the new facilities. The Council is delighted to be able to provide world class facilities to make anyone’s goal of integrating physical activity into their everyday routine a lot easier.”
Council Director of Active and Healthy Communities, Michael Lipsett said, “The new facilities at Newry Leisure Centre include a Wellness Gym, Sports Halls, Swimming Pool, Indoor Soft Play Area and Café.”
Mr Lipsett continued, “The new gym has over 80 stations and incorporates ‘Technogym’ equipment. ‘Technogym’ is the premier world leader in designer of fitness and wellness equipment and is known all over the world as, ‘The Wellness Company’. New equipment includes cardio machines, strength equipment, functional training area and a 47 station spin studio. Users will be spoilt for choice and will be able to enhance their own level of training with specialised pieces of equipment including skill mill, skill rowers, watt bikes, treadmills. Programmes can be developed to suit individual needs or requirements whether these include improving fitness, staying fit, weight loss, rehabilitation or strength improvement to name but a few. The Wellness Connected Experience allows users to connect no matter where they area through the downloadable app. Our eight court and four court Sports Halls can also be used for a range of activities including all indoor sports. ”
The Head of Indoor Leisure, Kieran Gordon pointed out that the launch weekend will see the IFA International Futsal Squad visit the centre which is unique in providing floor markings for Futsal. Showcase matches for wheelchair basketball will take place with top teams within the Irish National Wheelchair Basketball League. The four court sports hall has ultramodern technology with a hydraulic floor which opens to reveal two trampolines which are accessible from floor level.
Mr Gordon added “Phase 1 of the new Leisure Centre was opened during 2015 and introduced the new swimming pool. The swimming pool encompasses a range of features to include an eight lane main pool, leisure and teaching pool with children’s water features, a top-of-the-range health suite, a flume as well as a viewing gallery with Olympic standard seating. The footfall through the doors has exceeded all expectations and the Council is proud to be providing lessons to over 500 people per week.”
Speaking about facilities for children at the new leisure centre Mr Gordon commented, “We believe in creating a fun and entertaining area for children of different ages and abilities and at Newry Leisure Centre we have created a safe environment to encourage children to ‘Be Active’. The Council’s ‘Be Active’ campaign is about motivating everyone to undertake more activity. Our new soft play area is for children up to 12yrs old and has a wide variety of play structures including slides, obstacles, climb over humps, balance beans, rope works, sensory equipment and lots more to keep children entertained. We want to give children the opportunity to adventure play and develop at the same time. Playing is a fundamental skill for children and while children play they explore, learn how things work and interact with other children.
“Newry Leisure Centre will also be offering a range of two hour Birthday Party packages including one hour of play in our soft play area, courts or swimming pools and one hour in our party room. In addition the Centres ‘Core Café’ is a leisure café, which means it is not the stereo typical leisure centre café, and will make every visitor feel welcome, comfortable and satisfied. With a wide range of freshly baked scones, cakes,freshly roasted and ground coffee together with a healthy clean eating menu, the Café will have something for everyone’s taste. Once you have booked your party you have the option of Core Café providing catering. Core Café can discuss all your party options from printing invites, baking the cake to dressing the room up fit for any little superhero or princess, delicious food, and an experienced party host for anything else you may need.”
After showcasing its new facilities to the public Saturday 4 November and Sunday 5 November 2017, Newry Leisure Centre Phase II will be open to the public for general use from 6.30am onwards on Monday 6 November 2017.
