Write a commentThanks to Newry community based charity, Silvery Light Sailing, the Albert Basin in Newry will soon be home to an 1896 Dutch Barge. The charity are looking volunteer crew from Newry and surrounds to help bring the boat to the city later this month.
Volharding is capable of accommodating 12 passengers and crew and will operate a calendar of events consisting of a mix of five day sail training voyages, maritime festival appearances, community events, public day sailings and corporate hire - All from a ship based at Newry Port!
Volharding’ is a converted single screw Dutch ‘Tjalk’ barge built in 1896 in the Netherlands as a coastal sailing barge and converted to commercial motor barge
The 120 year old, authentic Ketch rigged Dutch sailing barge is fully equipped to accommodate up to twelve passengers in comfort. With three bathrooms acquitted with domestic style showers and toilets, meals are prepared in a well-equipped galley kitchen, containing a large cooker/oven, two fridges and freezer. There is ample space for dining and relaxing.
The Journey to Newry - You can play your part!
Silvery Light Sailing are looking for volunteers to help bring the ship to Newry.
The delivery trip to Newry will start from Maldon, Essex on 28 April 19.
There are two possible routes that we may take with the route chosen dictated by expected weather conditions.
Route 1: North Sea – Inverness – Caledonian Canal – Oban – Newry 28 Apr – 6/7 May
Route 2: English Channel – Lands End – Irish Sea – Newry 28 Apr –4/5 May
The trip is a delivery voyage. They shall be sailing/motoring by day and at night with brief stops en route.
The vessel will be crewed by a professional skipper and first mate assisted by experienced crew . Volunteers are welcome and will be encouraged and expected to play a part in the daily operation of the ship (Watchkeeping/sail changing/cooking etc) Previous sailing experience is welcome but not mandatory. Accommodation will be in shared cabins . All meals provided.
It will be necessary to make your own travel arrangements to Maldon which is easily reached by bus from Stansted airport. (Flights from Belfast or Dublin) Crew to assemble in Maldon by no later than 27 April 19.
