Write a commentNewry based sailing charity, Silvery Light Sailing are seeking eight adventurous 18 to 25 year olds to be the crew on a five day residential sailing voyage onboard the 100ft Dutch Sailing Barge, Volharding. The Volharding is presently moored at its home port of Newry, right outside The Quays Shopping Centre in the city.
To take part you need to be available the first week in October and should be currently Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET)
The voyage will take place from 1 – 5 October 2019 sailing down the unique Newry Ship Canal, out through Victoria Lock and visiting ports in the Irish Sea and Isle of Man.
The Silvery Light Charity Project aim to restore an 1884 built wooden Tall Ship, The Silvery Light, to be used as a locally based community Tall Ship. The restoration project is currently located on the Middle Bank of the Albert Basin, Newry. In the interim and as a practical demonstration of volunteer, Heritage and maritime community opportunities that voluntary operated Tall Ship provides, the charity currently operate the 100ft Dutch Sailing Barge Volharding participating in maritime festivals and events whilst undertaking community and sail training voyages visiting coastal communities and ports.
Silvery Light Sailing Chairman, Gerry Brennan said. ‘With the support of the Irish Government Department of Foreign Affairs Reconciliation Fund we are able to offer this unique opportunity without cost to those willing to take up the challenge of a voyage onboard Volharding’
‘This is an opportunity open to all, previous sailing experience is not required. It is a great way to experience something new, build self confidence and to meet and make new friends. Its first come, first served,’ said Brennan.
