Site Meeting at Bulls Hill

A  site meeting has taken place at the Bulls Hill Housing Development involving local residents and representatives from Roads Service, Political representatives, Apex Housing Association and the PSNI.

Newry and Armagh MLA, Mickey Brady attended the meeting with his colleagues, Sinn Fein Cllrs Liz Kimmins,Charlie Casey  and Valerie Harte.

Mickey explained "This site meeting was organised in response to several concerns raised by residents regarding the safety of the road, known as Bulls Hill locally, and also anti-social behaviour inthe area to enable the residents to voice their concerns directly to the relevant agencies. The meeting was constructive and hopefully the issues of concern raised will be addressed".

Newry City Councillor Liz Kimmins commenting on the issues involved said  "A lot of these residents have younger children and are petrified to let them outside their front door for fear of cars speeding down the hill. On a number of occasions there have been cars stuck on the hill as it is so narrow and is impassable for two vehicles coming in different directions.

Additionally, the residents have clearly stated they are very fearful particularly as we enter into the dark evenings as there is no lighting whatsoever on this very secluded road.  We have therefore asked both Roads Service and Apex housing association to seriously consider the provision of adequate street lighting to increase security for these residents. Two residents described how on different occasions they have found individuals in their back gardens at night time, and this has left them feeling unsafe in their own homes" and she continued 

"PSNI officers Neil Cornwell and Helen McCartan encouraged the residents to report any concerns they may have as this will enable them to identify any emerging patterns of anti-social behaviour and police can respond accordingly to increase the safety of all residents living in this area"

The meeting concluded with the representative from Roads Service agreeing to investigate the possibility of introducing any further traffic calming measures which may alleviate the issues affecting these residents, including the possibility of ramps or a one way traffic system. Apex Housing Association has also agreed to look into the issue of lighting and encouraged residents to report any incidents of anti-social behaviour to their housing officer also".
