Employability Through Sport in partnership with Newry City Community Trust and Newry Sports Partnership CIC organised a recent series of workshops. The Workshops drew on elements of the PWC Skills Through Sports Programme focusing on those skills acquired by participation in sport which are desired by potential employers. The session which was co-ordinated by Malcolm Roberts, IFA Grassroots Development Officer, offered young people a series of workshops which covered topics such as teamwork, leadership, coaching others, finance management and motivating teams. The three workshops were;
1. Sports Performance to enhance opportunities. This focused upon the opportunities a young person can access when he/she engages in sport as well as the pathways to further and higher education.
2. Recreation to employment. Showing how to identify and plan a skills pathway to employment. The aim is to demonstrate how an interest in sport can, through bite size courses, help you attain the skills and qualifications that employers are asking for.
3. Stay on top of your game. This session communicated the need for continuous professional development (CPD). Lifelong learning and motivation to improve.
These sessions were attended by 25 young people from the Newry City area who gained help to clarify the meaning of ‘employability’ as well as how sport can play a major role in developing these important skills.
The sessions also demonstrated useful techniques which can enable young people to sell their skills effectively to employers at both the application and interview stages. After attending the workshops the participants were invited as guests of Newry City Football Club to the Sponsors Lounge to watch their match against Cliftonville at The Showgrounds.
