Repair work at the passage grave at the summit of Slieve Gullion is due to be completed before this year's Winter Solstice.
MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed progress on repair works to the passage tomb, which was closed for last years Solstice awaiting the repairs. Sunlight illuminates through the entrance to the chamber at sunset on the shortest day of the year.
McNulty said it was incredibly positive to see the expert work being undertaken by skilled architects, engineers, blacksmiths, stone masons and all involved in the delicate and complex repair to the cairn at the summit. He described the prehistoric monument, steeped in legend, as offering a magical and mesmerizing experience for both locals and first time visitors when crawling along the passageway into the chamber.
"After months of pressing Executive Ministers on this, I am happy to hear that works are expected to be completed in time for the winter solstice so people will once again have the chance to experience that wonder and awe."
