Write a commentFive local schools will be heading across the Atlantic later this month as part of Newry and Mourne District Council’s Sister Cities Partnership with Southern Pines North Carolina.
The local schools taking part in this exciting initiative are St Joseph’s Boy’s School, Newry High School, Our Lady’s Grammar School, St Joseph’s High Crossmaglen, St Mary’s High School and the Sister Cities committee acknowledge that the exchange couldn’t take place without the support of the schools.
The Sister Cities music youth initiative will bring together 12 young musicians from Newry and Mourne and Southern Pines from the 24th October – 31st October to experience a sharing of the diverse culture of music across the Atlantic.
The young people will have the opportunity to avail of music workshops and a range of activities which will see them performing along with a variety of cultural talents from Southern Pines, North Carolina.
Mayor Daire Hughes explained that “both the Newry and Mourne and the Southern Pines Sister Cities committees felt it was very important for the success of this international relationship to have young people involved and to benefit with stronger cultural exchanges between our two communities”.
The initiative has been made possible by the committee of our Southern Pines partner and in particular Denise Baker who has been instrumental in developing the project and extending the partnership.
