Over one hundred representatives from Co Clare are in Newry this weekend as part of a Twinning Sports exchange and you never know they may be able to offer a few tips on the fine art of Hurling after last weekend's spectacular result in Croke Park.
The representatives, mostly young people from County Clare are going to sample the hospitality of Sports Clubs in our Community. Volunteers and coaches have put their heads together to give these young people the time of their lives with an action packed programme.
This event continues what started in 1994 when the first exchange weekend took place. Since then, these events have grown to the event that we now have with nearly 140 young people participating in activities such as Currach Racing, Gaelic Football, Boxing, Hurling, Soccer, Music, Pitch & Putt, Bowling & Lazar over the weekend.
The Mayor Councillor Mickey Ruanne said “I am particularly delighted that we have Hurling on the agenda after Country Clare’s amazing display and worthy winning of the All Ireland Hurling Final last weekend.”
Newry & Mourne’s Twinning Committee wish to thank all of the clubs and organizers here and in County Clare for supporting this weekend and hope that the links forged during this weekend will continue into the future.
Events put on for the visitors on Saturday include Currach Racing at Warrenpoint Baths from 11am to 3pm; Boxing at Formula Karting from 10.30am to 12.30pm; Pitch and Putt from 11am to 5pm at Cloughogue; U12 Soccer from 10.45am to 1pm at Sheepbridge Bowling and Lazer; Special Olympics Soccer from 11am to 2pm at Newry City Football Club; Girls U12 Gaelic Football from 11am to 12.30pm at Buttercrane and 1pm to 5pm at Carrickcruppen GAC; U13 Hurling match against Craobh Rua, High Street Bessbrook from 11.45am and 2pm to 4.30pm at Formula Karting and Fishing on the Newry Canal during Saturday.
