Southern Regional College students from a range of creative and technical disciplines and across all campuses competed recently in a STEM competition on the College’s Newry campus.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) competition showcased the innovative and entrepreneurial talents of the College’s students as they presented their product, design and business ideas.

Judges iincluded Elizabeth Moran, Norbrook Laboratories; Alan Matthews, Applied Systems; and Tony McMahon, Invest NI. 

Presenting at the awards ceremony, Raymond Sloan, Director of Client Services at SRC commented: “The work that our students have displayed here today is outstanding and a credit to both the students and their tutors. As well as this, their ability to articulate their ideas and present them to the judging panel has been excellent. I am confident that those students who will progress to represent the College at the overall BEST Awards Ceremony in May in Newcastle will have every success.”

One of the judging panel, Elizabeth Moran, Training and Development Manager at Norbrook Laboratories said: “I am overwhelmed today by the standard of work the students have displayed and how they have presented their ideas to us. Each and every student taking part today is a credit to SRC.”

Local area winners included James Shilliday from Newry who won the Life Sciences Award, he studies HND in Engineering.  For the Engineering Award, Paul Lyons and Ronan McGibbon from Newry were part of the 3R Mobility Project, they both study the HND in Engineering.

The team ‘Rock Bottom’ to win the Software award included Raymond Markey from Newry and Joshua Cummins from Crossmaglen who study the Foundation Degree in Science in Interactive Multimedia.  The Entrepreneurial Award was won by Vyginta Astrauskaite from Camlough who studies on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.  The STEM Overall Winner was Aodhan O’Brien from Newry who studies on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.
