The Active Runner is reminding all walkers and runners that there is still time to take part in The Big Spring Clean Up, to help keep our running, and walking routes clean with a 2 min clean up in the spring months of April and May.
Kevin Gallagher of the Active Runner Magazine a free runners/walkers online magazine in support of charities and as a runner himself, has seen a rise of rubbish on his running routes in Warrenpoint and surrounding countryside in County Down and has cleaned many roads on his running routes .
“it is a shame that many see the countryside as a dumping ground, throwing items from their vehicles and not taking it home with them to their own bins or to a bin on their route home. The countryside and roadsides are now heavily littered with rubbish, and I keep as many routes clean as I can said Kevin and hope with fellow runners/walkers we can play our part in helping out.”
“Many will ask why we the runners and walkers should have to clean this up and they are right, but until we find and address this issue in other ways , I ask all runners /walkers to take part so we highlight this and keep our little piece of roadside/countryside clean that we are proud of and love to run and walk on.”
Kevin also said “Not only are you helping clean your area but building a better stronger community that will support you along with future clean-ups.. The younger generation will also take part more because you showed them the way, as someone who also takes part in beach cleans I now see it with different eyes, you spot rubbish you never did before.”
“Your safety comes first never clean a busy traffic route, always wear gloves or use a litter picker, never clean during dark periods, and only clean what you can at one time and drop in the nearest street bin to you. Never clean alone do it with a group of people for your safety, We can play our part in reducing the rubbish on our routes and feel prouder we did our bit.
You can take part by going to their Facebook page at The Active Runner and be able to follow a link to all the details and all Clubs/ Groups /Parkruns etc that take part will have their own Facebook banner made that they took part.
“ I now call myself a plogger a term used in Sweden that Erik Ahlström came up with referring to the act of picking up trash and litter while jogging , and as well as keeping me fit it is a great feeling that you kept that little route you love running clean and to be proud of.
