Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Louth County Council Strategic Alliance, members have welcomed recent funding awards in the region for Camlough Lake and Carlingford Lough. Camlough Lake got £2.8m Levelling Up funding while Carlingford Lough got €150k for a Feasibility project to develop Carlingford Lough as a tourism destination of excellence.
In November 2022, a revised action plan of activities to be delivered by both councils under the Strategic Alliance was agreed. Key priorities included the regeneration of the economy, dealing with climate change and the environment, infrastructure and digital connectivity, and health, education and well-being. The Alliance had identified key projects within these areas and assisted with applications for Levelling Up Funding, in relation to a new recreation centre at Camlough Lake, and the Shared Island Fund in relation to helping develop Carlingford Lough as a tourism destination of excellence.
At their last meeting in Dundalk, Joint Chairs, Councillor Declan McAteer and Councillor Antóin Watters said they were both delighted to have been involved in progressing successful funding applications for both development projects.
Councillor Watters said, “The Newry Mourne and Down and Louth Strategic Alliance has been pivotal in the achievement of recent funding to the Newry Mourne and Down and Louth Regions.”
Councillor McAteer said, “The work of the Strategic Alliance has enabled this fantastic investment to be achieved, which will no doubt open up further opportunities for the sharing of services and coordinated management of key resources on both sides of the border.”
