Write a commentStudents from schools from across the district have taken part in a unique media project to commemorate the events of 1916 at Newry Museum.
The project designed by The Nerve Centre and supported by the Councils Good Relations section as part of the Councils Centenary Programme, invited students from Newry High School, St Columban’s College Kilkeel, St Marks High School Warrenpoint and St Marys High School Newry to become involved in a digital design workshop where they explored the events of Easter 1916 and the Battle of the Somme in a creative manner.
Students were firstly tasked with creating their own recruitment or anti conscription posters around World War One. They used ‘Green screen’ technology and software such as Photoshop to create their content.
This workshop allowed them to explore issues of propaganda and the use of imagery and text at the time, compared to modern day advertising methods.
Secondly Students had an opportunity to produce a short comic book on the role of the Cumann na mBan members during the Easter Rising. Students had the opportunity to use iPads and comic creation software to create their pieces of work. This workshop allowed students to examine the suffrage movements at the time as well as understanding what the Proclamation hoped to achieve. Finally students were given the opportunity to showcase their work.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Ruane welcomed the students saying, “2016 is an extremely significant year for us all on the Island of Ireland. Over the coming months we will witness a variety of events and commemorations which will acknowledge 1916. I am particularly delighted that the Council would support this type of programme to firstly bring students together from different schools and secondly to learn about this Islands history in a fun and interactive way using todays modern technologies.”
