On Wednesday 3 September, the Baton of Hope, the biggest suicide prevention initiative ever seen in GB and Northern Ireland will arrive in Newry carrying a message of remembrance, resilience, and hope.

The Baton of Hope is a powerful national movement designed to break down the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health, while raising awareness and signposting people towards the right help and support. Designed by Thomas Lyte, the baton itself is an iconic piece of craftsmanship, pointing upwards to symbolise hope and a brighter future. It has already travelled across cities and communities throughout the UK, carried by bereaved families, survivors, frontline workers, and mental health advocates, each one carrying more than a baton, but also the stories of loss, healing, and courage.
Seamus McCabe, CEO of PIPS Hope and Support, said “The Baton of Hope is more than a symbol – it is a movement for change. As it passes through our towns and villages, we will remember those we have lost, support those who are struggling, and show that no one has to face these challenges alone. We urge everyone to come out, take part, and help us carry hope together.”
On its journey through Newry, Mourne and Down, the Baton will pass through Crossmaglen, Cullyhanna, Keady, Camlough, Bessbrook, Kilkeel, Rostrevor, Warrenpoint, Banbridge and Newry. Each town will mark the occasion with a range of activities including remembrance ceremonies, wellbeing initiatives, cultural performances and community gatherings, all aimed at encouraging conversation, promoting resilience, and inspiring hope.
The day’s events will culminate at Newry Leisure Centre, where a large Charity Market will run from 10:00am until 8:00pm. The market will host information stalls, opportunities to connect with mental health and suicide prevention organisations, wellbeing activities, and a series of training workshops designed to empower local people to support one another. This is a drop-in event and open to all to attend.
At 6:00pm, the community will come together on Monaghan Street, Newry, for a Community Solidarity Walk. This special event will give people the chance to line the route, walk in unity, and make a visible impact in carrying hope forward for those in need.
Padraig Harte, Project Lead for the Baton of Hope Newry, added: “This is an historic moment for our district. The Baton represents hope, healing, and community spirit. By joining the Charity Market, lining the streets, or walking with us in the evening, every individual can play a part in sparking vital conversations and building a legacy of support.”
The Baton of Hope’s visit is being delivered locally by PIPS Hope and Support, and is kindly supported by the Public Health Agency, Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Southern GP Federation, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Together, these organisations are encouraging everyone to get involved, whether that is lining the streets, visiting the charity market, joining the walk, or spreading the word across the community.
The Baton of Hope is about remembrance, solidarity, and above all, hope. On 3 September, communities across will come together to carry that message forward, proving that together, change is possible. Be part of it, be there and take part in events happening in your area.
