Teens Assaulted

Police in Newry are reminding the public to be mindful oftheir personal security whilst out and about following an assault.

On Friday morning, 16th of May, shortly after 9am, two male teenagers were walking along an alleyway between WIN Industrial Park and Mourneview Park when they observed two males. The first teenager walked on and the males asked if they could use his phone. He refused and attempted to walk on but was punched to the head and body by the males. The second teenager was punched by a third male before the two managed to run off.

The first male is described as being around 16 years of age with short, dark hair and was wearing a black Adidas jacket and blue jeans. The second male is described as being around 16 years old with short, dark hair and was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. The third male is described as being around 16 years old and was wearing blue jeans and a blue, denim jacket.

Police are appealing to anyone with information about this incident to contact them in Newry on the 101 non-emergency number, quoting ref: 356160514.

Police are also advising the public to take steps to protect their phone and valuables when they are in public.

• Try not to walk and talk in the street. Stay focused, thieves will simply snatch the phone out of your hand.

• Don’t leave the phone sitting on a table in a bar or restaurant, someone may distract you with one hand and swipe your phone with the other. 

• Never leave your phone unattended or allow anyone else to use it. 

• Report lost or stolen mobiles immediately to the service provider. You may be liable for the cost of any calls made until the time of the report. 

• Property mark your mobile under the battery. Use your postcode and house number to help police identify it. 

• Register your phone. Use www.immobilise.com and improve your chances of getting it back if it is lost or stolen. 

• Consider installing and enabling a free security application (app). 

• Register the phone’s unique IMEI number with the mobile phone company.

• Set up a password or enable the PIN security feature of your mobile phone. 

• Lock your phone to your SIM card. This reduces the possibility of your phone being used with another SIM card.
