As Daria explains "My border collie Roy has been awarded the title of 'Nose of Armagh 2019' and is currently in the final of the 'Nose of Tralee' competing against the 31 other Noses."
The competition is run by Pet Sitters Ireland and is sponsored by Newry's Pet Connections and Tesco Ireland.

Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk
Apparently the ability to talk is a bonus and Roy is certainly not short of conversation!
I’m Roy the Boy, the current Nose of Armagh! Here I am at the highest point of Co. Armagh, on the top of Slieve Gullion.
My recent hiking adventures make me think I may have evolved from Border Collie to Mountain Goat – like a Pokémon.
Thankfully we live in a place surrounded by mountains, so much more exploring to do!
Last year, I made the journey from a small farm in Derry where I’d lived for 3 years, to this mahooosive city called Newry. I had met a lot of sheep, but I did not realise how many people there were! I LOVED my new human from the start, but I was shy with others and hid behind her a lot. Now I know this is home, I’ve started making new friends with people and dogs alike!
My one problem, is I can’t seem to befriend my brother Aslan. I’ve heard the word cat mentioned and that he’s from Narnia – so maybe that’s why. Sometimes if I’m being too hyper, he gives me a tap on the nose, but I remain pawsitive though that we will someday play together! It took me a while to learn what was acceptable to eat. Apparently shoes are a big no no! Before I learned this I chewed a very tasty flip flop and expensive hiking boots, as well as socks, books, toilet rolls and even my lead. Yummy! But my humans now make sure I have tasty treats instead.
Apparently I have two tongues, as my new human speaks Irish to me – I don’t know what bilingual means, but my new tongue means I can make friends with madraí le Gaeilge! She says I now have two tongues, but I only have one lovely nose. I use that nose a lot, which is now called the Nose of Armagh! I can sniff out treats in a flash; give loving nose bumps; sniff people’s hair; poke my nose under humans arms to remind them they should be stroking me; and very importantly, to sniff out the trail back when we’re on adventures and my human’s sense of direction fails – I think there’s something wrong with her nose.
Being the Nose of Tralee would mean the world to me and I am proud to represent my county. Ard Mhacha ABÚ!
