Saval and Lurganarre need enhanced traffic calming measures, thats according to SDLP Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick who has written to Transport NI and received assurances that additional road safety signage will be erected around Saval but remains frustrated that no action is to be taken in Lurganare.
She said: “Road safety continues to be a huge concern, especially in rural areas. That’s been underlined by the accident hospitalising several people locally last week. That’s why I have written to Transport NI requesting additional road safety signage and traffic calming measures in a number of areas, including Saval and Lurganare.

“I’m pleased that we now have a commitment from Transport NI to provide additional signage around Coalpit road as well as further road markings urging drivers to slow down, especially near the football field. There’s a real risk that we could see an accident here, potentially involving the young people who often use the field. It’s important that we take action to prevent such a tragedy.
“I am disappointed, however, that despite a site inspection there are no plans to install further traffic calming measures in Lurganare beyond an additional 40mph sign. I remain concerned that many motorists are using excess speed through the area and therefore are placing local people in danger. I will continue to lobby for action here and will be in touch with the local PSNI to ensure rigorous road traffic patrols in the area.”
