Translink NI Railway passengers are being asked to validate their tickets or smartcards before boarding trains, following the rollout of new platform validators across the network. The new system doesn't apply to Senior Smartpass holders and other concessionary Smartpass who should continue collecting their paper ticket from a Ticket Vending Machine before travel.
The validators, which are now live at stations across the north represent the latest milestone in Translink's Future Ticketing System (TFTS), an initiative aimed at delivering modern ticketing solutions to encourage greater use of public transport.
Translink's William McGookin said the rollout follows a successful pilot at selected stations. "This important 'go-live' milestone across our rail network follows a successful pilot at selected stations where we saw customers quickly adapt, finding the validators straight-forward and hassle-free," he said.
McGookin pointed out that the technology is already widely used elsewhere. "The use of customer platform validators is well established across other rail operators, as well as across our Glider network, and we hope it quickly becomes part of regular travel habits across our rail network," he said.
Using the validators is straightforward. Smartcard holders present their card to the card reader, while those with paper or mobile barcode tickets use the barcode scanner. A green tick on screen indicates a valid ticket, while a red X signals otherwise.
McGookin added: "We would like to thank our customers for their support as we deliver another key ticketing milestone, driving modal shift for a sustainable transport future."
Information signage is displayed on trains, and passengers can also find a video guide and further details at www.translink.co.uk/railvalidators
