Write a commentThe last Mayor of Newry and Mourne Daire Hughes has commended the work of the Newry and Mourne Traveller Forum and said he hopes their positive input into the former Newry and Mourne Council will continue into the new Newry, Mourne and Down Council.
The Forum, which works to advocate the rights of the Travelling Community, met as part of Newry and Mourne Council for the last time last week.
The forum has offered excellent information and advice to the council on Traveller issues throughout its lifetime and we hope to see that continue with the new council," he said.
"A number of statutory agencies sit on this forum including representatives from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, the Confederation of Community Groups, the Women and Family Health Initiative, Council Officials from the Good Relations department and six elected representatives including myself so it's a valuable body when it comes to giving information and aid to Travellers, giving them somewhere to raise concerns and letting them know that they are very much a part of the community here."
