Write a commentThe Southern Health and Social Care Trust has hosted its second ‘one-stop’ health and information clinic for young people aged 16-20 with Type 1 Diabetes.
The clinic was held following fantastic feedback from all the young people, health care professionals and external agencies who attended the pilot event last year. Around 50 young people living with Type 1 diabetes attended this event along with family members or friends.
Dr Sarinda Millar, Paediatric Consultant said: “We really want to continue to be innovative in our service delivery and to be responsive to the needs of 16-20 year olds. Peer support in this age group is very powerful.’”
Health checks on offer at the clinic included; retinopathy screening, podiatry, psychology support, injection technique, HbA1c and BMI.
There were also a number of information stands and talks on popular topics for young people including; Alcohol, Sports, Travel, Sexual Health and Pregnancy, Well-being and Lifestyle, Citizen’s advice, Diet plus much more.
Pharmaceutical representatives brought along the latest technology for the young people to try out and Trust Staff were available for advice throughout the afternoon.
Dr Paul McMullan, Consultant Diabetologist said: “Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is a huge step for anyone and we want to make sure that we prepare our young people as best we can.”
