At its recent AGM Newry Trades Union Council (TUC) pledged to continue its opposition to the government’s austerity measures. Cara Murchan President of Newry TUC said, “the Tory government is penalising working class communities for the economic crisis, including those who rely on benefits to top up low wages. Trade union members can play an important role in opposing these attacks by becoming active within their union branches and campaigning organisations.”

Ms Murchan added: “The public, voluntary and private sectors are all facing major upheaval we will have to shout loud with a collective voice to get the message home to politicians that cuts to services, and poor investment in jobs and infrastructure are not acceptable.”
Ms Murchan concluded: “Local workers in all sectors should join a trade union. Newry TUC will provide support for those who wish to join a union.”
