Construction work continues on the Carlingford Lough Greenway linkage between Victoria Lock and the border, with a section at both ends on schedule for completion by the end of December. A path has been constructed at Victoria Lock, directing cyclists and walkers through the car park while at the border a fenced area has been constructed to join up with the almost complete path between there and Omeath.

Work is also progressing on the land stretch in between at Rough Island with traffic lights in operation. The missing link is the boardwalk section and it is hoped work will start there on construction of around 1km of timber boardwalk with steel structure and piles in early January, with a proposed completion date of mid 2024.
For cyclists and energetic walkers the facility can't be completed quickly enough with the Newry to Omeath road not an inviting road to cycle on. While cycling clubs and those energetic cyclists who push themselves to the limit will most likely still use the road, families, especially those with young children will be glad of the off-road option.
Whilst currently there is no incentive for Omeath walkers and cyclists to travel north, once the greenway is completed it will be as easy for them to travel to Newry as it currently is to Carlingford.
Carlingford Lough Greenway when it is completed in mid 2024 will make it much safer to travel between Newry and Carlingford and give drivers an opportunity to leave the car at home when planning a day out.
