Work is continuing on the Carlingford Lough Greenway path between Newry Canal and the Clanrye River, with the section from the Albert Basin in Newry to Victoria Lock due to be completed by December this year. It's hoped that section could then be open to the public. The Greenway is part of a plan to develop The Great Eastern Greenway from Belfast to Dublin.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council are working with Louth County Council to extend the existing high quality off road cycle and walking greenway from Carlingford to Omeath on to Newry as part of a cross border project and funding secured for phase one meant that the section from Albert Basin to the Weir on the Omeath Road was completed this month.

The plan is to link the greenway from Carlingford to the Newry Portadown Canal Towpath cycle way to Portadown and Lough Neagh. It will link up cycle networks on both sides of the border and also link with other tourist attractions in the area such as the Ring of Gullion Way and the Mourne Mountains.

Further funding has already been secured to deliver phase 2 of the project from the Weir to Omeath in conjunction with Louth County Council.

When the Greenway is completed it will be the only totally off-road pedestrian link between Newry and Carlingford and as such has the potential to be developed as a safe access  for locals and visitors to use. It will provide immediate benefits to people living adjacent to the Greenway, improving the living environment and providing opportunities for leisure, exercise, recreation and supporting healthier lifestyles.
