Early public engagement on the Newry Inner City Greenway Active Travel Signature Scheme will begin on 8 October 2026 and Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins is encouraging people in Newry to share their views and help shape how the scheme develops.
A drop-in event will take place at Newry Leisure Centre between 1pm and 7pm on Thursday 8 October 2026.
A 'Newry Greenway feasibility study' was carried out on the route in November 2022 by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council with four route options suggested. This latest scheme was first mentioned by DfI in November 2024.
The Newry Inner City Greenway aims to improve walking, wheeling and cycling connections through Newry city centre. It would link existing active travel infrastructure, neighbourhoods, businesses, community facilities, public transport and visitor destinations.
Minister Kimmins said: "This signature active travel scheme aims to improve connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists through Newry by providing safer, more accessible and attractive active travel infrastructure, linking communities with key destinations and encouraging healthier and more sustainable travel choices.
"My Department is keen to understand any opportunities and local issues and I would encourage people to give their views and help shape the future development of the scheme."
Local knowledge and feedback is being sought to help inform the assessment of route options and support the identification of a preferred route for the greenway. People are being asked to help the Department better understand what works well today, what could be improved, important parking and access requirements, traffic and safety concerns, and opportunities for walking, wheeling and cycling.
The scheme has four objectives. On connectivity, it aims to provide a continuous, direct active travel corridor through Newry city centre that closes a missing link in the active travel network and strengthens connections between the Carlingford Lough Greenway and the Newry Canal Towpath.
On inclusivity, the aim is to create a high-quality, attractive and accessible route that is safe and intuitive for users of all ages and abilities. For health and wellbeing, the scheme seeks to encourage everyday walking, wheeling and cycling by providing a pleasant, welcoming route that supports healthier lifestyles and enhances user wellbeing. On the environment, it aims to enhance the urban environment through infrastructure that supports a resilient, sustainable transport system.
