The newly formed Newry People's Forum has said that it is vital that people turn up in large numbers at tomorrow night's Save Daisy Hill Hospital meeting in the city to convey their anger at the downgrading of services at the hospital. The meeting hosted by SOS Daisy Hill group and Unison starts at 7pm, Thursday 1 October in the Canal Court Hotel and all are invited.
The Southern Trust have stated that due to the difficulty they are experiencing in getting Consultants for the hospital, it may be necessary to 'temporarily' move maternity services to Craigavon Hospital from November.
The Forum says it shares the community's anger and frustration at the proposal.
Forum Spokesperson Brian Cleland said that they were backing the call by SOS Daisy Hill for a public meeting on 1 October and would be attending to show their support.
"The downgrading of services at Daisy Hill is part of a strategy of managed decline for Newry that has been adopted at all levels of government. It is vital that people turn up on Thursday to say enough is enough, that we are not willing to be treated as second class citizens any more." he said.
