Newry High School was one of many schools in the district that marked Walk to School Week. To mark the event they were visited by Minister for Regional Development, Danny Kennedy.
Walk to School Week is one of the most action-packed weeks on the school calendar. It encourages school children all over the country to take to their feet and discover for themselves the health, financial, social and environmental benefits of active travel.
The theme for this year’s event was ‘Set the Pace’ which challenged young people to lead the way in terms of sustainable travel habits, setting an example for others and creating a better future for everyone. Walk to School Week is supported this year by home energy supplier Airtricity.
At Airtricity sustainability is a core value. Airtricity plays an active role in helping communities promote a greener and healthier lifestyle, and its sponsorship of Walk to School Week 2011 is an opportunity to help promote these values among younger members of the community
This year Walk to School Week ran from Monday 16 to Friday 20 May with 243 schools taking part from around the Province.
